Term 4 Overview

Curriculum Overview

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

In SEL, students will be learning about self management Self Management- being aware of your emotions and how to manage them such as anxiety, self esteem and educating students on general mental health issues, eg, depression.


The concepts covered this term are:
Decimals – Recognising place value to tenths and hundredths.
Geometry – Symmetry (flip, rotate & transformation)
Multiplication – Skip counting, displaying multiples of a number and practise of multiplication tables.
Division – Grouping, division patterns and division facts
Measurement – Mass and Volume, Metric units
Money – Adding and subtracting amounts.  Using decimal place value.
Time – Telling time to the nearest 5 minutes. Time zones around the world.
Data – Gather data and display in a graph
Angles – Degree of angles, names of angles and greater than/equal to
Fractions –  compare fractions of half, quarter and thirds and equivalent fractions. Add and subtract fractions.


In Writing, students explore the different elements within a poetry text. They will learn about the different types of poetry such Acrostic, Haiku, Limerick and Diamante. Student’s will learn about persuasive language, structure and develop an argument to persuade the reader. They will also learn how to gather information about a topic and write a detailed and structured lesson plan. The Literacy program will also include personalised spelling (a component of their weekly homework).
In Reading, activities will include exposing the students to a wide range of texts, including digital texts. Students will work at their own level on comprehending these texts in order to build their skills and knowledge. The texts students will be exposed to include fiction and nonfiction texts as well as information texts related to our Inquiry unit.


Students have investigated how the earth rotates on its axis causing regular changes including day and night. They have explored the sizes and movement of the Sun, Earth and Moon and described the different time zones around the world.

Education in Faith

Students evaluate their choices and actions by reflecting on Catholic Social teaching. By exploring the concept of Stewardship students show respect for Creation? The earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation. We are called to respect this gift. We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in and for sharing all the wonders and resources the earth gives us.


During Term 4 the students will be introduced to ‘L’orario’ (telling the time) in Italian.They will also continue to focus on days of the week and months of the year. Towards the end of term the students will complete ‘Natale’ (Christmas) activities.



This term, the Year 3/4 students will be introduced to Lego robotics to develop their knowledge and understanding about computer programming. Through a number of mini-projects, students will build a range of different robots and use the corresponding iPad app to program these robots. Students will also begin to work with the idea of ‘variables’ and explore what happens when a variable in a robot’s program is changed.

Performing Arts

The focus for Performing Arts for this term is Music.  The students will be learning to sing some contemporary songs focusing on the elements of music including dynamics, pitch and rhythm patterns. They will listen and respond to a variety of music extending their musical terminology and ability to describe and explain their personal preferences. The students will use musical instruments to develop their understanding and ability to use musical notation. The final learning sessions will include preparation for our Park Orchards Community Christmas Carols.


Homework will be given out to students on Thursday and returned for marking every Wednesday.  Please make sure that reading is recorded and signed in students diaries. Students are required to complete 90 minutes of homework each week including 4 x 15min reading sessions.
